Disruptions Through Digitization, Robotics and Machine Learning

Industry 4.0 is a frequently discussed term these days. It describes the fourth industrial revolution and the transition from automation to cyber-physical systems. This means an integration of computational and physical processes and interconnected systems (IoT). Many other topics like Cloud computing, augmented reality, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and many more are also collected under the term Industry 4.0. This presentation will analyze the status of NDT 4.0 and explain a variety of potential implementations within X-ray inspection.

X-ray inspection has a lot of potential for early adaption of the Industry 4.0 principles due to its high digitization degree and as it operates on images, which are easy to interpret by common AI algorithms. Many common inspection tasks can have a high potential for automation through robotics. The requirement to move into the forth industrial phase is a proper execution of the third phase, which is digitizing the process.

Other advantages can be obtained by using Cloud storage and evaluation to allow distributed evaluation of acquired data. The next level is using Artificial Intelligence, which takes the long used Automated Defect Recognition to the next level. At the end of this presentation a few examples and case studies are presented to show the current state of implementation.
